About He Ara TikaThink back to when you were at school and what benefits you may have gained if you were given the opportunity to have a Mentor to assist you throughout the year. This is what the He Ara Tika Māori Youth Mentoring Programme can provide for your rangatahi.
The He Ara Tika Programme has been developed and designed to cater to the needs of Māori students. It is specifically for Māori & delivered from a Māori perspective. Through He Ara Tika Mentoring we encourage rangatahi to focus on their education, identify their strengths and set goals for their future. Self motivation is an important pre-requisite from all rangatahi who are accepted into the programme. Parents, Rangatahi & Mentors are encouraged to work together as whanau involvement in the programme is a necessity if we are to make a difference in the lives of our young people. Mentors and Mentees are obligated to meet regularly at least once per fortnight. Parental permission for mentoring to occur is required. THE ORGANISATION Te Mātāhauariki o Tauranga Moana Incorporated is an Iwi Education Provider that caters to the educational needs & requirements of Tauranga Moana. The Organisation is only one of 12 Providers throughout the country that currently delivers the He Ara Tika Maori Youth Mentoring Programme. HAT Māori Youth Mentoring is: A Ministry of Education Initiative in conjunction with Te Mātāhauariki o Tauranga Moana and is aimed towards encouraging & supporting our Maori rangatahi while at Secondary School The programme is for our Māori achieving students who require the use of a Mentor (Kaiakopono) to assist and support them in all aspects of their learning, growth & personal development. Schools need to realise that this is not a programme for ‘At Risk Rangatahi’. HAT is kaupapa Māori driven with a unique ‘Māori way’ of mentoring our rangatahi. The aim of He Ara Tika: 1. Encourage our Māori youth to stay at school until Year 13 & then move into areas of Higher Learning (University, Polytech, etc) 2. To ensure that our rangatahi are comfortable and feel confident in being Māori while at a most vulnerable time of their personal growth. Secondary years are an important time in a young person’s life as the decisions they make at this stage will determine the outcome of their futures. 3. To provide ongoing support for our rangatahi who are on the He Ara Tika Māori Youth Mentoring Programme. What is He Ara Tika? 1. A youth mentoring initiative developed by the Ministry of Education 2. Delivered only at Secondary Level the aim of the programme is to increase student success, encourage rangatahi to stay at school longer and then venture onto a career pathway 3.
